140 byte chunks that Twilio uses to send SMS messages to carriers.

Twilio automatically splits messages longer than 160 characters into segments, which are then reassembled by the recipient's device.

The effective character limit per segment is 153 because each segment includes a data header to ensure proper reassembly.

For example, a 161-character message would be sent as two segments: one with 153 characters and one with eight characters.
